Assorted historical documents collected by Evans, described in his cover letter to Reuben Gold Thwaites, April 8, 1908. The documents include an order, November 18, 1789, from Don Domingo Cavello de Robles, subaltern commander of Cuba, to Don Vincente Manuel de Z'espedes, governor of St. Augustine, on the matter of a seized Spanish vessel. The order is accompanied by a typewritten transcription and translation, by J.H. Robertson. Also included are: a requisition request, July 31, 1834, for extra whiskey by Colonel Zachary Taylor, commanding at Fort Crawford, Wisconsin Territory; a warrant for $44,000 drawn on the treasury of the Confederate States of America, November 28, 1864, signed by Confederate Secretary of War James Seddon; and a handwritten eyewitness account by Iowa soldier George J. Reynolds of the death of Union General James B. McPherson outside Atlanta on July 22, 1864.

Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States. In the spring of 1845, Taylor appointed to command the Army of Occupation stationed in Corpus Christi. In May 1846, Taylor led his army into north Mexico. Following the battle of Monterey, Taylor was ordered to join General Winfield Scott at the siege of Veracruz. Taylor's victory at at the Battle of Buena Vista made him a national hero....

McPherson was born in Clyde, Ohio. He attended Norwalk Academy in Norwalk, Ohio, and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1853, first in his class, which included Philip H. Sheridan, John M.
